As far as communicating, I just yell.
We ride with grandkids sometimes. No long trips yet but we're working on their mother. Only thing I've noticed is that they tend to fall asleep once in a while. They wear a strap around their waist (through their belt loops) that clips to my belt loops. That way they can't fall off.
Don't worry; In a couple of years your son will be taking you for a ride on his Savage. Then he'll be taking girls for a ride. Who knows, if you keep it for a few years, your first grandchild may be conceived on that Savage.
